Day 03 - Rome (Lido di Ostia, Ostia Antica)

We took our first metro trip from Rome to Lido di Ostia about 15 miles away. We had lunch at a little risorante on the beach. Ostia is the main beach area for Rome and is crowded during the summer, but was pretty deserted on this chilly day in October.

We got back on the train and headed to Ostia Antica.

Ostia Antica was the main port for Ancient Rome and was located at the mouth of the Tiber River as it drains into the Tyrrhenian sea.

The great thing about this site is that you can walk everywhere around the ruins and explore as you like.

The quality of the ruins is amazing. Over the centuries it was filled in by the silting of the Tiber River. The mouth of the river used to be right here, but in alomst 2000 years since it was inhabited the mouth of the river has moved about 3 kilometers to the south-west.

Many of the mosaics are still intact. You can almost imagine people living in these houses and walking across the floors.

Many people are familiar with the city of Pompey and it's well preserved ruins. If you ever visit Rome and don't want to go all the way down to Pompey you can just take a 30 minute train ride to Ostia and get a really good look at an Ancient Roman city.
