Trajan's Market
All the columns in the foreground are part of the Basilica Ulpia. The large column in the background is Trajan's Column. And the dome to the right is Santissimo Nome di Maria al Foro Traiano which was built by the church much later in 1751.
A view of a walkway in Trajan's Market.
A map of the Roman Empire at it's greatest extent in approximately 117 CE. Notice how it includes all the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. It is probably the greatest empire the world has ever seen until the the United States of the late 20th Century.
Our first shot on our approach to the Colosseum. We didn't get to go on inside yet. That will be the next day.
This thing is huge!
You sometimes forget that there is still a lot of archeology that is still going on. We have so much left to discover about the past from this area. We happened to see these people at work excavating and snapped this picture.
The Arch of Constantine is a triumphal arch in Rome, situated between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. It was erected to commemorate Constantine I's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge on October 28, 312.
The next few shots are from the Palitne Hill. This structure was the Palace of Septimius Severus and is an extension of the Domus Augustana.
I think this is part of the Stadium.
The Stadium is part of the Palace and may have been used by the emperors as a private garden.
Hello Albert! He decided this would be a good time to get out of my backpack and have a look around. I think he really enjoyed the Palatine Hill.
Me, my stepmom Sue, and my dad Hank.
I loved all these tall trees.
I think he's trying to figure out where they went to the bathroom.
A nice overview of the structures on the Palatine Hill.
We took this shot from the Palatine hill of the west end of the Roman Forum.
Looking more to the east of the Roman Forum. The large building with the three arches is The Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine and was the largest building in the Forum.
Santa Francesca Romana was built in the second half of the 10th century.
The Arch of Titus is a triumphal arch located on the Via Sacra just to the south-east of the Forum. It was constructed by the emperor Domitian after the death of his brother Titus, commemorating the capture and sack of Jerusalem in 70.
Looking to the west in front of the Roman Forum.
Temple of Antoninus and Faustina
This is not part of the original Forum. It's a modern art installation.
Not sure about this one yet. Still doing research. It's a cool shot though.
Temple of Castor and Pollux
Via Sacra
The Temple of Saturn is a monument to the agricultural deity Saturn
Back the Colosseum again.
Shot from the Ponte Palatino of Tiber Island with The Basilica of St. Bartholomew.
The Basilica of St. Bartholomew.
We had pizza for dinner at the tables on the left.
