We got day two started off a little late because we were still a bit jet lagged. We set off from our apartment around 11:00 and headed towards the Pantheon area. We ended up walking a total of 7.5 miles today.
Along the way we came across an area called Largo di Torre Argentina with it's four temples from the Roman Republic era. It also has the remains of Pompey's Theater where Julius Caesar was murdered on it's steps.
This cleaver wild cat was hunting pidgins.
I just thought this was a funny looking guy up on this church.
We stopped and picked up some sandwiches and Coke Light and had lunch on the fountain steps in front of the Pantheon. Not a bad place for lunch.
The inscription on on the top reads "M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT" which means "Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, Consul for the third time, built this". It was originally built during his time as Roman Consul in 27 BCE. It was burned down by fire in the 1st century CE, and rebuilt in 126 CE.
The Pantheon has the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world at a diameter of 142' and weighing in at 4,535 metric tons.
Pantheon means "Every god" and was intended to reflect the diverse nature of religious practices in ancient Rome. Since the Christian era it has been changed to be a church, and remains an active one to this day.
